Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), often referred to as Polycystic Ovarian Disorder (PCOD), is a common hormonal disorder that affects people with ovaries, primarily during their reproductive years. PCOS is characterized by a range of symptoms and imbalances in the reproductive and metabolic systems. These include irregular menstrual cycles, the presence of multiple small cysts on the ovaries, elevated levels of androgens (male hormones) like testosterone, and insulin resistance. PCOS can manifest differently in each individual, leading to a variety of symptoms such as irregular periods, excessive hair growth (hirsutism), acne, weight gain, and difficulty conceiving.
